If you have ever pulled a favourite pair of earrings out of a drawer and found them looking a little dull, a little grey, a little less than they were the day you bought them — take a breath. Nothing has gone wrong. This is one of the most ordinary things that happens to jewellery, especially in a city like Kolkata where the air is warm and heavy with moisture for most of the year.
Tarnish and softened shine are not signs of a bad piece. They are signs of a piece that has been worn and loved. And almost all of it can be slowed down, cleaned away, or brought back to life. At Jonaki, we make contemporary silver and lifestyle jewellery meant to be worn every day, so we think about this a lot. Here is everything we would tell a friend about keeping her jewellery bright — the honest version, no myths.
Why jewellery tarnishes (and why it turns your skin or the metal dark)
First, a little honesty about what your jewellery is actually made of, because that changes everything about how you care for it.
Most lifestyle jewellery — including a good part of what we make — is plated brass or alloy, given a warm gold-tone or a bright silver-tone finish, sometimes set with cubic zirconia (CZ) or glass. A few of our pieces are silver, and we mark those clearly on the product page. None of our jewellery is BIS-hallmarked, and we will never pretend otherwise; hallmarking is a specific certified standard for precious-metal purity, and lifestyle jewellery simply is not that category. What it is, is beautiful, affordable, and made to be enjoyed.
Here is the science, kept simple. Metals react with the air, with moisture, and with the tiny traces of sulphur and salt that live in sweat, humidity and even pollution. Silver develops a dark layer called tarnish. Plated pieces behave a little differently: the thin layer of finish on top gradually softens and thins with wear, which lets the base metal beneath show through as a darker or warmer tone. This is completely normal. It is not a defect, and it is not something you did wrong — it is simply what a worn finish does over time.
The good news: the speed of all this is almost entirely in your hands. Two pieces bought on the same day can look years apart depending only on how they are worn and stored.
The daily rhythm that protects everything you wear
You do not need special products or a routine that takes time. You need one small habit, and it is this: jewellery goes on last, and comes off first.
Perfume, hairspray, lotion, sunscreen and makeup are the biggest, quietest enemies of a bright finish. They are full of alcohols, oils and acids that dull plating faster than anything else. So get fully ready — moisturiser, fragrance, hair — let it all settle for a minute, and only then put your jewellery on. At the end of the day, take it off before you do anything else.
And please, take it off before you:
- Bathe or shower — soap and hot water are hard on any finish, and they collect in clasps and settings.
- Sleep — a full night of body heat, sweat and friction against your pillow ages a piece quickly.
- Work out at the gym — sweat is salty and slightly acidic, exactly what tarnish loves.
- Swim — chlorine in pools and salt in the sea are especially harsh and can dull plating fast.
- Clean the house or cook — bleach, detergents and even some spices are surprisingly aggressive.
One more small thing that makes a big difference in our climate: wipe your jewellery with a soft, dry cloth before you put it away. Ten seconds to lift off the day's sweat and moisture is the single most powerful anti-tarnish move there is. If everyday brightness is what you're after, our Everyday Glow edit and the everyday earrings are designed exactly for this kind of gentle, regular wear.
How to clean jewellery gently at home
When a piece starts to look tired, resist the urge to scrub. Gentleness always wins.
For most plated and lifestyle pieces, a soft, dry microfibre or cotton cloth is all you need. Wipe along the surface in light strokes to lift oils and dullness. For a slightly deeper clean, dampen a soft cloth with a tiny bit of plain water, wipe, and then dry the piece completely and immediately — trapped moisture is what causes trouble.
A few firm don'ts, because these cause more damage than dirt ever does:
- Skip the silver-dip liquids and harsh polishes on plated pieces — they are made for solid silver and can strip a thin plated finish right off.
- Avoid toothpaste and baking soda. They are abrasive and leave fine scratches, even if the piece looks bright for a day.
- Don't soak pieces with CZ, glass, pearls, thread or glued settings — water loosens adhesives and dulls stones.
- Never use a rough tissue or paper towel — paper is more abrasive than it feels.
For genuine silver pieces, a dedicated silver polishing cloth is a good, safe friend. When in doubt about a specific piece, our full care guide walks through it by material, and you are always welcome to simply bring it to us.
Storage: where tarnish is really won or lost
Here is a truth that surprises people: jewellery tarnishes fastest while it is sitting unworn, in the open, in a humid room. Air and moisture are the culprits, and an open dish or a tangled drawer gives them everything they want.
The fix is to store each piece dry, still, and away from air. A few habits that work beautifully in Indian homes:
- Keep pieces separate. Store each one in its own soft pouch or a lined box compartment so they don't rub, scratch or transfer tarnish to each other.
- Go airtight. A small zip-lock pouch or an airtight box dramatically slows tarnish by keeping humid air out. Press the air out before sealing.
- Add silica gel. Toss the little silica sachets from packaging (or buy a few) into your jewellery box. They quietly absorb moisture and are the cheapest anti-tarnish tool you own.
- Choose a cool, dry spot. Keep jewellery away from bathroom shelves and sunny windowsills — heat and steam are not its friends.
- Hang your chains. Storing chains flat or hung prevents the knots and kinks that weaken links over time.
Every Jonaki order arrives in a pouch for exactly this reason — keep it, and let it do its job long after the piece has come home.
When it's time for a re-polish (and why you never have to worry)
Even with the best habits, a well-loved piece will eventually lose a little of its first-day shine. That is not the end of its life — it is simply a moment for a refresh. And this is where being part of the Rupashree Jewellers family, on Rash Behari Avenue since 1997, quietly changes things for you.
Every Jonaki piece comes with free lifetime re-polishing at our Rashbehari showroom. Walk in, or post it in — no receipt needed, no time limit, no charge. We will clean it up and bring back its glow. This is our honest answer to the nature of plated jewellery: finishes soften with wear, so instead of pretending they won't, we simply promise to refresh yours whenever it needs it.
So wear your jewellery freely. Wear it to the things that matter and the ordinary Tuesdays too. If it dulls, that only means it did its job — and we will make it bright again.
If you're ready to add something new to the rotation, our First Light collection and the wider Jonaki shop are full of pieces made to be worn and loved this way. A quiet favourite to start with: the Jonaki Wristlet. Whatever you choose, care for it kindly, and let it carry a little light for years to come.
